Hey Joey
Joey, a city horse, works hard hauling Mr. Polaski’s vegetable cart in a bustling neighborhood and is part of a close-knit community.
Though he likes Mr. Polaski, Joey dreams of escaping his living conditions (a stall on the fourth floor of a warehouse) and the challenges of his daily life. He imagines what a life in the country would be like. He gets a chance to find out when Mr. Polaski trades his cart for a delivery truck. Moved to a farm, Joey discovers the difficulties of country life. Mr. Polaski retrieves Joey, when he realizes that his horse is more dependable and reliable and that he misses his friend.
Aline Shader wrote “Hey Joey” (1969) for her students at Bowen Elementary School in Newton Centre, MA and directed the production in 1969, 1972 and 1977.
